MediaScheduler is the user-friendly browser-based media scheduling interface for the MediaMaster system. Although the MediaMaster system allows for the option of a purely digital video system, physical sources and media will not be going away any time soon. MediaScheduler ensures fair access to these contested resources, giving teachers exclusive access to the video media and a video player to use it on for a given time period. The server employs intelligent scheduling logic, rebalancing the schedule as necessary to avoid problems automatically. Centralized sources and scheduling allow much more efficient use of these sources. In the traditional model, a source’s in-use time includes the time it takes to physically move the source and media from where they are stored to a classroom and back again. Each source may be tied up for an additional hour or two per day, simply due to the inconvenience of moving it around. In a typical MediaMaster system, the turnaround time for sources is just 5 minutes, with media changed during the bell period between classes. This lower limit is configurable, and enforced by the server to ensure that there is enough time to change media. MediaScheduler lets teachers search for appropriate media by title, call number, subject, author, description, or all of these at once. Search results can then be filtered further by media type, and sorted by any of several fields. Searches happen “live,” as you type, so it feels more like a standalone application than a web search engine. MediaScheduler also shows a graphical view of a day’s scheduled events. This allows rapid evaluation of the availability of sources.
